What happens at a Texas Values internship?

The following post was written by Texas Values 2018 Summer intern Michael Johnson.

If you’re reading this and considering a Texas Values Internship I must give you a few warnings first. If you do not wish to have meaningful contributions at work, be a valued part of the team, or be pushed and grow exponentially while having a blast, this is not for you. I can confidently say there is no other internship like the one at Texas Values and it is not for those who wish to sit around and do nothing.

All that being said, my time at Texas Values has truly been one of the most impactful times of my life. I have had a job every single year since age sixteen, but none have been in such a great environment. Texas Values has given me the opportunity to be surrounded by professionals who have experienced success and are experts in their fields. This has broadened the scope of my awareness far more than I could have predicted. I believe I came here much more of a boy than a man, and believe I am closer to the latter than the former now. It has also revealed how the people you surround yourself with will be the ones that you become like. Seeing firsthand what it takes to be at the top has made me reevaluate how much effort and purpose I have been living my life with. These people show up every day with a ready to work attitude and it is contagious.

I stated earlier that this is an internship like no other. While most political oriented internships require sitting in an office cold calling for some elected official all day this could not be more opposite of Texas Values. Every day is different, which brings unique and exciting challenges and journeys. One week you may find yourself at the Texas Republican Convention meeting almost every conservative elected official in the state. The next you may be traveling to three different cities for fundraisers. You might even find yourself visiting the Capitol and getting face time with influential people that you could have never imagined meeting.

However, more important than what you get to do is what you get to learn. You will learn to negotiate, research, make a presentation and you will learn important values. This is a result of the staff’s chemistry. The team at Texas Values all have their own unique personalities that tie together to make a well-oiled machine that fights for Faith, Family, and Freedom. Since the team is smaller, it creates a close-knit group that allows a family like atmosphere full of integrity and productivity to flourish. I learned so much from each of them and it quickly became clear why this small group of people can have the size of influence they do. The professionalism and dedication displayed are hallmarks of what great people they are. There is no way that someone can be in this environment for three months without being influenced so positively. I know for a fact that not every workplace is like this and to find one that does not compromise their beliefs, while also yielding results, is extraordinary.

As my time at Texas Values draws to a close, I realize what can be accomplished in a short amount of time using the right mindset and discipline. The impact this summer has had on my life cannot be stated enough. While specific events and happenings may fade in memory, the intangible lessons and growth experiences will not be soon forgotten. Do not apply for this internship if you are not ready to become a full-fledged member of the Texas Values family.
