VICTORY: Children Protected From Drag Queen Shows in Leander

Austin, Texas – Late Thursday night, the Leander City Council voted 6-1 to require background checks for all presenters at library events. They also voted to ensure no other outside groups are able to sponsor events at the library- including Drag Queen shows.

Recently, the city canceled a Drag Queen show at their library after an outcry from Leander citizens. However, a private group sponsored a Drag Queen event that was still held at the Leander Public Library. The city spent about $22,000 for security at the event. Texas Values Policy Advisor Mary Elizabeth Castle testified Thursday night about the need for background checks as well as the dangers of the American Library Association’s promotion of these hyper-sexualized events to children.

Drag Queen Story Time is a hyper-sexualized event marketed and used to entice young children, ages 3-5, where a man dressed as a woman reads stories exploring topics of sexuality and transgender issues. Many of the readers also perform at homosexual adult venues. Some of the readers have been known to hold the children in their laps during the event. In Houston, two of the volunteers were discovered to be convicted of sexual abuse against minors.

Mary Elizabeth Castle, Policy Advisor for Texas Values, stated, “The City of Leander made the right decision to protect the children of Leander from these dangerous Drag Queen shows at the public library.”
