Texas Values, National Groups Call for Texas House to Pass Texas Women’s Privacy Act on ‘Women’s Privacy Day of Action’

Austin, TX – May 14, 2025: Today, Texas Values, female athletes, and other grassroots groups held a Women’s Privacy Day of Action to encourage the Texas House to set a hearing for The Texas Women’s Privacy Act, SB 240.  The day began with a press conference with Texas female athlete Brooke Slusser, Independent Women Ambassadors Payton McNabb and Amie Ichikawa, and Texas legislators Senator Mayes Middleton and Representative Valoree Swanson.

Senator Mayes Middleton, author of the Texas Women’s Privacy Act (SB 240), said:

“As a husband and dad, I want my wife and daughter to be safe when using facilities designed for women’s privacy. No woman should be made to feel unsafe or uncomfortable in spaces dedicated for their sex. Safety for women and children is common sense, and certainly should not be sacrificed for the left’s radical gender ideology. Women should not be forcibly exposed to men in private spaces, period.”

Representative Valoree Swanson, author of the Texas Women’s Privacy Act (HB 239), said:

“The Texas Women’s Privacy Act has overwhelming support, with over 80 co – and joint-authors in the Texas House, including members from both the Republican and Democrat parties. The bill preserves the safety and privacy of our Texas women and girls, barring men from using women’s restrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms, and sleeping quarters. This bill MUST pass in order for Texas women and girls to feel safe and secure in their private spaces. Anything short of passage will leave millions of Texas women and girls vulnerable in the spaces they need to feel most secure.”

Mary Elizabeth Castle, Director of Government Relations for Texas Values, said:

“The clock is ticking and women cannot wait! We want our Texas Legislature to pass clear laws that keep men out of women’s locker rooms, shelters, and private spaces. There has been a growing number of reasons, this session alone, to make sure that women are safe when they go to the restroom. The Texas House must hold a hearing for The Texas Women’s Privacy Act and Governor Abbott must sign it into law”.

The Texas Women’s Privacy Act would encourage government entities to create and enforce policies that would keep locker rooms, showers, restrooms, prisons, and domestic violence shelters separated based on biological sex. SB 240 passed out of the Texas Senate in April and is now in the Texas House Committee on State Affairs. The Texas Women’s Privacy Act has gained support from a number of state and national groups. According to the Movement Advancement Project, 19 states already have some policy that separates private spaces based on ‘sex’[1]. Texas would not be the first state to pass a law to protect women in their private spaces. Many key national leaders like Riley Gaines and Paula Scanlan have voiced support of the Texas Women’s Privacy Act.

The Texas Women’s Privacy Act, SB 240, by Senator Mayes Middleton passed out of the Senate in April and was referred to the House State Affairs Committee. To learn more about the Texas Women’s Privacy Act, please visit https://protectwomensprivacytexas.com/
