Release: Texas Senate Holds First School Choice Hearing Today

Austin, TX – January 28, 2025: The first hearing of the 89th Legislature on school choice is taking place today in the Texas Senate Education K-16 Committee.

Jonathan Covey, Director of Policy for Texas Values, released the following statement:

“Much work has already been done and we’re closer than ever to ensuring that parents have the fundamental right to direct the education of their children. More and more states are removing artificial boundaries and prioritizing the success of students. The time for school choice in the State of Texas is now.”

The bill, Senate Bill (S.B.) 2, is authored by Senator Brandon Creighton, the chair of the Senate Education K-16 Committee. The bill provides $11,500 for public school students with a disability, and $10,000 for children in public school who do not have a disability.

Texas Values policy team members will be present and testify at today’s hearing to make sure parents and students have the best options for education, and to ensure that every parent is in control of their child’s education.

Texas Values policy team is available for comment. Please contact Ashley at media@txvalues.org or 737-314-2450 (m) to schedule an interview.
