Breaking! Governor Abbott Signs Law Banning Taxpayer Dollars for Abortion Logistics

Austin, TX – August 19, 2025: Today, Governor Greg Abbott held a bill signing ceremony for SB 33 by Senator Donna Campbell and Representative Candy Noble, banning local governments, such as the City of Austin, from using taxpayer dollars to fund abortion travel and abortion logistical support for women seeking abortions out of state. Texas Values team members were present at the signing ceremony.
Jonathan Covey, Policy Director for Texas Values, said:
“We are grateful to Governor Abbott for once again protecting life by keeping taxpayer dollars from being used to funding lodging, travel, and other logistics of women seeking abortions. By signing SB 33, we are putting an end to this dangerous and wasteful practice and ensuring that the sanctity of life is being upheld as the citizens of Texas intended.”
Last year, Austin City Council approved $400,000 in the city budget for a fund that would provide money for airfare, hotels, and food in order to persuade women to travel out of the state to seek abortions. Recently, the City of San Antonio also considered setting up funds to send women out of the state to obtain abortions.
Texas’ Fifteenth Court of Appeals ruled that the City of San Antonio must stop the implementation of their program funding out of state travel for abortions.
SB 33 is a continuation of the efforts made in the 86th Legislature when a law was passed (SB 22) to stop government entities from contracting directly with abortion providers.
