Texas Values Defends Christian Universities’ Religious Freedom

Austin, TX, April 7, 2015 –Today, president and attorney of Texas Values, Jonathan Saenz, joined a press conference with students and the presidents of Houston Baptist University and East Texas Baptist University after a court hearing on a case of religious freedom protection from President Obama’s HHS Abortion Mandate. The federal government is trying to force religious schools to violate their sincerely held religious beliefs, or face millions of dollars in fines. The Baptist universities were also joined in court by the following religious institutions: University of Dallas (a Catholic school), Catholic Charities, and Westminster Theological Seminary, all “fighting for their life” against the federal government.

 Jonathan Saenz, president and attorney of Texas Values, made this statement:

“These Texas religious institutions have made it clear that the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act and Supreme Court  precedence forbid the government from forcing them to choose between violating their religious beliefs, or facing what one federal judge called ‘draconian fines.’ Religious freedom is not for sale in Texas. These continued assaults on religious freedom by the government are out of control and, in this case, the government is directly attacking private religious institutions. We will continue to support these admirable institutions in their stand for life and religious liberty.”
