Social Studies SBOE Votes/”In God We Trust” Added- Part 2-Live Blogging

2:22 p.m.  Discussion of postponing the remainder of Social Studies Votes (“First Reading”)  until the March SBOE meeting.  SBOE has other business it intends to complete today, and Social Studies votes have taken longer than expected.  This could mean that the “final” votes on Social Studies that were supposed to be taken in March, may get pushed to the follow

1:39 p.m. Discussion of new USSCT Justice Sonia Sotomayor.  Rick Agosto has asked to add her as the first female Hispanic on the USSCCT.  Sotomayor is not added, fails.  Dems and Bob Craig vote for Sotomayor.

1:08 “In God We Trust”, and “E Pluribus Unum”, phrases for students to learn the meaning of, makes it into Social Studies.

12:44 p.m. Discussion over Hip Hop music in U. S. History.  Was not in before curriculum writing teams put it in this year. Some female members object to how Hip Hop is negative towards women and has unacceptable langauge for school children.  Hip Hop stays in. Democrats and Republicans Bob Craig and Pat Hardy vote for Hip Hop.

Bob Craig offers to add Country and Western music.  Is added.

For some reason, Republican Gail Lowe, SBOE Chair is not voting.  Even on “tie” votes.  This doesn’t make sense.

12:17 p.m. William F. Buckley, Jean Kirkpatrick, Newt Gingrinch., not in. Ted Kennedy suggested, failed.  Kennedy suggested, failed.

12:14 p.m. Dr. McLeroy: Strict construction will be taught instead of judicial interpretation when students learn about how the U.S. Constitution is amended.

11:29 SBOE Member McLeroy; Conservative Movement of 1980s and 1990s, NRA, Phyllis Schlafly added.  7-6 vote.

10:25 a.m. Margaret Sanger suggested to be added to Social Studies curriculum.  Amendment fails.  McLeroy’s idea has merit, get Margaret Sanger out there so students can know that she supports eugenics, forced seletctive breeding and forced abortion, similar to views of Nazi Germany.  But take a risk that it is not covered correctly.

10:08 a.m.  SBOE Member McLeroy, America described as “expanionsm”, not “imperialism.”  SBOE Member Berlanga and Mavis Knight votes against it.
