SBOE Meets to Align Current Social Studies Standards with Anti-CRT Law

The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold a special meeting today, Monday, September 26 at 8am, and tomorrow, Tuesday, September 27, to vote on the changes that need to be made according to Senate Bill 3. The Texas Values team will be testifying at the Monday meeting. Recently, the SBOE decided not to revise the Social Studies Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) for K-12 students. The SBOE decided to delay the review and revision of the Social Studies standards until 2025.

The anti-Critical Race Theory Law, Senate Bill 3 (SB 3), authored by Senator Bryan Hughes, requires that Social Studies standards are following the law’s requirements by the end of the year 2022. The changes being made are expected to make sure students are taught civics and avoid the national trend of teaching that the American founding is bad. Nevertheless, the SBOE will not be deleting or revising any TEKS per their vote earlier this month.

Director of Policy for Texas Values, Jonathan Covey, released the following statement:

“The alignment with Senate Bill 3 is critical not only to teach students concepts of religious liberty, good citizenship, and media literacy but also to defend against partisan attempts to inculcate kids with a radical LGBT agenda and race stereotyping propaganda. Schools need to focus on education, not indoctrination.”
