Mississippi Governor Signs Religious Freedom Law

Momentum builds in States to Protect Freedom to Believe

Today, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed an important religious freedom law (HB 1523, the Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act) that protects citizens from government discrimination for believing marriage is between one man and one woman. The law includes protection for pastors, churches, religious organizations, individuals, schools, and businesses. The law is supported by an overwhelming majority of Mississippi voters.

Jonathan Saenz, President and Attorney of Texas Values, made this statement:

“Mississippi’s new religious freedom law is a clear indication that States continue to recognize the growing threats to religious freedom and the need to take action to stop government discrimination against people who believe the truth about marriage.

“We applaud Governor Bryant and the Mississippi Legislature for working to protect the fundamental rights of their citizens. No one should ever be punished by the government for believing that marriage is the union of one man and one woman.

“Though there have been increased attacks from big business and Hollywood elites on states that protect fundamental freedoms, states like Texas, North Carolina, and now Mississippi have refused to be swayed by these empty threats. They have stood strong against political correctness and are working to protect citizens and their ability to exercise their God-given Constitutional rights.

“We encourage other states to follow Mississippi’s example and protect their citizen’s freedom to believe and peacefully live out their beliefs,” concluded Saenz.
