SOCIAL STUDIES PASSED FOR FINAL ADOPTION, 9-5.  14-0 FOR ECONOMICS.  THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!

Ken Mercer giving speech about supporting final vote.  Mercer is mentioning how the Mexican American Legislative Caucus hearing would not let me testify at their invitation only hearing, after they criticized the State Board of Education for allegedly not having a “transparent” process.

Mercer talking about how Thomas Jefferson was used as a pawn, how some media falsely reported that he was completely out of the social studies standards.

High School standards up for vote.   Final vote 9-5.  FOR: Craig, Hardy, Bradley, Cargill, Dunbar, Leo, Lowe, McLeroy, Mercer.  Against-Agosto, Allen, Berlanga, Knight, Nunez.  Miller did not vote.

Same on K-8.  Now on Economics.

Motion made to postpone final vote until July 2010.  Motion fails, 6-8.

Lawrence Allen:  “We haven’t listened to the elected officials.”

Agosto: “This thing belongs in the trash.”

3:35 p.m.   Leo moves to remove “White v. Regester” case.  Amendment fails.

Effort to remove “constitutional republic” fails.

2:30 p.m.  Bob Craig Amendment on religious freedom. “Examine the reasons the Founding Fathers protected religious freedom in America and guaranteed it free exercise by saying that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof and compare and contrast this to the phrase “separation of church and state.”

AMENDMENT PASSES, 11-3, BIPARTISAN VOTE!!  Allen, Rs vote for.

2:13 p.m.  Back from a short break.  Now on World Geography.

1:25 p.m. Still on World History.

12:54 p.m.  World History section.  Mercer wants to add Thomas Jefferson and James Madison to the World History standard, without Enlightenment referenced.   Madison is not going to be in now.  He’s mentioned in other sections.  Thomas Jefferson to be added alone.

Agosto and Berlanga making speeches about this being “new”.  Thomas Jefferson is new?

Cynthia Dunbar talking about the fact that she teaches at the doctoral level on political philosophy.  Amendment passes, 11-3.  Berlanga, Nunez, Agosto against.

12:34 p.m.  Craig amendment: Thomas Jefferson and Enlightenment period language.  Wants to strike John Calvin.

Miller talking about professor she talked with.  Amendment fails, 7-8.  Miller/Craig and Ds vote FOR.  Hardy, other Rs against.

12:31 p.m.  Dunbar seeks to add “William Wilberforce” to World History. Amendment passes.

12:26 p.m.  Oscar Romero goes back into to standards, without objection.  Some initial discussions about concerns, mentioned that he is a “such as”, so not required to be taught, just an example/suggestion for teachers.

12:10 p.m.  Craig Amendment: change “benefits of free enterprise…” to “effects of free enterprise…”  Amendment fails.  For-Allen, Craig, Hardy, Knight. Miller.  All other against. 

12:03 p.m. Cargill Amendement on free market economy: explain why communist command economies collapsed in competition with free-market economies at the end of the twentieth century.  Passes.

11:41 a.m.  Knight amendment: Adds the references “BCE” and “CE” in addition to A.D./B.C. language to reference time/years.  A similar effort was tried early on and failed.  This amendment fails as well.  7-8.  Craig/Miller for along with 5 Ds.

11:30 a.m. SBOE started with other issues this morning and now are back to work on Social Studies issues.  They finished K-8 last night, and made it partially through U.S. History.
