Carroll I.S.D. Sued By Parent, LGBT “Cultural” Plan Controversy Continues

Austin, Texas – Today, Carroll I.S.D. was sued and was sent a Public Information Act request, in response to the cloud of controversy and lack of transparency surrounding Carroll I.S.D.’s so-called “Cultural Competence Plan” by the Board’s advisory committee on diversity, the District Diversity Council. Texas Values has been asked by numerous parents in Carroll I.S.D. to assist them and has now submitted an open records request asking for information that the public and parents need to know.

Parents and students in the district have repeatedly expressed concerns over how this plan threatens the religious liberty of students who hold Christian values, pits students against each other, and promotes radical LGBTQ agendas and policies. Some parents have specifically called it out as a “pre-packed plan with a political agenda.”

Carroll I.S.D. parents have also filed their own individual open records requests and one parent has filed a lawsuit against Carroll I.S.D. on this matter alleging specifically that Carroll I.S.D. officials violated the Texas Open Meetings Act. The lawsuit filing can be seen here.

“Carroll I.S.D. is focusing more on politics than education, and parents have a right to know what’s really been going on behind the scenes. If they refuse to be transparent that’s simply more reason why this tainted LGBT “cultural” plan needs to be shut down,” said Jonathan Covey, policy director for Texas Values.

The open records request seeks copies of any and all presentations, reports, and communications, including emails, and any other written correspondence relating to:

• Funding applications for federal grants intended to support the Cultural Competence Action Plan developed by the District Diversity Council.
• Communications between members of the Board of Trustees and representatives of the organization known as the Southlake Anti-Racism Coalition from August 1, 2018 to August 2, 2020.
• Grant applications for victim advocate counselors created between January 1, 2019 to August 2, 2020.
• Reports, communications, or notes generated by the District Diversity Council detailing any processes discussed or established for tracking microaggressions from August 1, 2018 to August 2, 2020.
• Surveys given to students about diversity, discrimination, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity from August 1, 2018 to August 2, 2020.

Parents in Carroll ISD are speaking out against the proposed plan and are holding the school board accountable for their lack of transparency. Recently, 800 parents in Southlake Carroll wrote and signed a letter expressing concern about the plan, the activities of the District Diversity Council, and the actions of the school board.
