Boy Scouts Should Stand Firm, Resist Pressure to Change Homosexuality Policy

Austin, TX, January 31, 2013 –  Earlier this week the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), a private organization headquartered in Irving, Texas, indicated that the organization is considering ending its longstanding policy on homosexuality. A recent Gallup survey found a majority of Americans do not support changing the policy and allowing open homosexuals to be Scout leaders.

According to news reports, in 2012 major corporations, including Intel, Merck, and UPS decided to suspend funding for the BSA due to its policy and the CEO of AT&T, Inc., Randall Stephenson, has been identified as a major player working for the proposed change. The policy was held constitutional in a 2000 U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled the BSA has the legal right to “bar homosexuals from being troop leaders.”

Texas Values President Jonathan Saenz released the following statement in response:

“The Boy Scouts of America board would be making a devastating mistake if they succumbed to the pressure of the homosexual activists and big corporations that simply don’t have the best interests of the Boy Scouts and their legacy in mind. Do the Boy Scouts now value perceived political correctness over their long-standing values, oath and their concern for the millions of boys under their care? I hope not.

“We encourage Texans to contact this Texas-based organization to express their concern over the drastic change that is unnecessary. The proposed change will almost certainly lead to the downfall of the national organization and to vicious attacks aimed at local level scout groups that meet at churches and choose to keep the current policy of membership and leadership based on moral values,” concluded Saenz.
