Ban On Chick-fil-A Continues: San Antonio Council Again Targets Christian Business

San Antonio, Texas – Today, some San Antonio City Council members attempted to use a procedural measure to reconsider the previous decision by the City of San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and others to ban a Chick-fil-A store from opening in the city airport. But Mayor Nirenberg took a vote and defeated this effort 6-5, and continued to affirm the ban on Chick-fil-A opening a store in the San Antonio airport because the business owners gave donations to Christian charities, including The Salvation Army. The City of San Antonio also refused to allow Senator Donna Campbell and members of the public to speak at the public city council meeting.

In response to this recent religious discrimination by the San Antonio City Council, Texas Values announced April 17 as “Save Chick-fil-A” Day and had hundreds of people join them at the Texas Capitol for a press event and in support of HB 3172 to protect Chick-fil-A at all night legislative hearing by the Texas House State Affairs Committee which ended at around 7 a.m. this morning. Additionally, the message #SaveChickFilA was trending worldwide during the day on social media. And over 34,000 messages have been sent to Texas House and Senate members supporting specific religious freedom legislation that would protect Chick-fil-A in this situation.

Jonathan Saenz, President of Texas Values said “This second vote by the City of San Antonio to ban Chick-fil-A because of their religious beliefs makes it clear, we must have a specific statewide law to stop this rogue government from such blatant discrimination. HB 3172 would protect Chick-fil-A in this situation and leave no doubt that local officials cannot get away which such outrageous hostility toward religious freedom of a private company and its owners.
