ALERT: Parents in Fort Worth ISD, Sex-Ed Vote Monday!

Encourage Committee to move forward with the ‘Best’ option for Sex-Ed The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) for Ft. Worth ISD will meet Monday, January 22, at 5:30 p.m. to review and recommend sex ed curriculum. We need ALL parents and stakeholders who care about the students in Ft. Worth ISD to show up to the meeting in person or by ZOOM (details below). While there are six publishers that could be chosen, Ft. Worth ISD has a history of choosing radical and explicit sex education materials over abstinence-based and sexual risk avoidance materials. As a general reminder, Texas Values does not believe sex education is necessary, but if sex education is to be taught it must be abstinence-based as required by the Texas Education Code 28.004. This year, FWISD selected 6 vendors to present their available materials to the SHAC. These materials underwent a thorough evaluation by their curriculum committee. The two programs with the highest scores were: “Choosing the Best” which is an abstinence-based, sexual risk avoidance model and is aligned to the Texas State Standards. This choice is a WIN/WIN for both the District and the Community!“HealthSMART” received the second highest score and promotes radical sex education and promotes risky sexual behavior among kids. However, the agenda for the SHAC meeting has been released and the SHAC plans to “narrow down curriculum choice to be shared with the community for input.” We must make sure that an abstinence-based, sexual risk avoidance curriculum is chosen by the SHAC Monday night! We are asking parents and stakeholders in Ft. Worth ISD to encourage the SHAC to move forward with the “Choosing the Best” program, and remind them that parents and stakeholders   DO NOT want “HealthSMART”.Please show up to the SHAC Meeting on Monday, January 22, at 5:30p.m. at the FWISD Teaching and Learning Center on 1050 Bridgewood Drive in rooms 1&2. For those who cannot attend in person, please join the meeting on ZOOM, link to it here. This important decision will impact FWISD for years to come! Please consider copying and sending the message to the SHAC chairperson and members below:
Dear Chairwoman Roina Baquera and members of the Ft. Worth ISD SHAC,I am a parent and concerned citizen in Ft. Worth ISD who would like to encourage the SHAC to move forward with the “Choosing the Best” human sexuality curriculum because of its initial high score given by the curriculum review committee and because it promotes sexual risk avoidance, which is the healthiest option for kids. I would like to remind you that in 2020, the Texas State Board of Education adopted Health standards that follow the sexual risk avoidance model.Parents and stakeholders in Ft. Worth ISD DO NOT want “HealthSMART” because of its promotion of risky and radical sex education. “HealthSMART” also received a lower score than “Choosing the Best”.Please make the decision on Monday night to move forward more than one option to be considered, keeping in mind that parents and stakeholders in the district find “Choosing the Best” to be the best option for students and parents.Sincerely,
