On our 2006 Voters’ Guide, Bob Craig answered FOR the following statement:
INTELLIGENT DESIGN: Present scientific evidence in our public schools supporting intelligent design, and not just evolution, and treat both theories as viable ones on the origin of life. On the Free Market Foundation 2008 General Election Voters’ Guide, Mavis Knight indicated she was FOR the rejection of “Biology textbooks which do not teach both the scientific strengths and weaknesses of evolution.” Click here and scroll to page 12 of the Voters’ Guide to see her answer. Liberal groups in Texas are attempting to remove a policy that has been in effect for 20 years that requires schools to teach the strengths and weaknesses of all scientific theories. These groups want to ban teaching of the weaknesses of all scientific theories, particularly evolution. They want students to hear about the strengths of evolution without ever hearing the weaknesses. They acknowledge that these weaknesses exist:
“Strengths and weaknesses” exist in any scientific theory of paradigm. Scientific skepticism and challenging is central to how science gets done. (p. 17 of PDF version)
Yet they don’t want students to talk about them. True scientists agree that all scientific theories have weaknesses. If the SBOE sides with liberal extremists and removes the “weaknesses” requirement, students will learn bad science and teachers will be censored from teaching true science.
The State Board of Education will vote on this issue next week after their hearing on Wednesday! We’ll be there testifying, but we need your help. Call your SBOE Member to ask them to vote for the 20-year policy of teaching strengths and weaknesses!
