Texans Rally to Support Religious Freedom of Christian County Clerk

jonathan speaks at granbury rally (620-240)Today, in a strong showing of support for religious freedom, Texans rallied in downtown Granbury to support Hood County Clerk Katie Lang. Two hundred people attended the rally with just 24 hours notice.

Hood County Clerk, Katie Lang, issued a statement this week choosing to abstain from issuing same-sex ‘marriage’ licenses as it is a violation of her sincerely held religious beliefs. Lang has stated that the clerk’s office will still issue same-sex ‘marriage’ licenses. However, LGBT pressure groups have called for her resignation and planned to host a rally in Granbury today again calling for Lang’s resignation.

Texas Values president Jonathan Saenz and local community and faith leaders spoke at today’s Religious Freedom Rally, and Texas State Senator and Granbury native Lt. Col. Brian Birdwell, issued a statement of his support for the effort.

Texas Values Jonathan Saenz released the following statement:

“On the eve of our Independence Day, the Texas and American values of religious freedom and personal liberty are just as important now and as they ever have been. We will not stand by and watch as LGBT radicals try to destroy the guarantees of the First Amendment of our Constitution and ruin the personal lives of Texans who support marriage between one man and one woman. We will not be silent. We will proudly rise up with the timeless colors of red, white and blue as our backdrop, for God and country.”

Sen. Brian Birdwell’s statement reads, in part:

“The fundamental problem before those of us who disagree with the LGBT community is that this group seeks to force you and I to conform to their viewpoint and to compel us to keep our opinions to ourselves, essentially eliminating the ability for men and women of faith to participate in public policy discourse and debate. To do so is to strip us of our inherent right to live out our faith.

This attitude is in direct conflict with the principles of a free republic. We must not be deterred from engaging in public discourse based upon our beliefs; such rights to free speech and the exercise of religious freedoms is woven into the very fiber of our nation. All citizens of all faiths, creeds or cultures have the right to their opinions.

To allow in this moment anything less than the full protection of the First Amendment for ALL citizens would be an utter failure to the fidelity of our constitution and a terrible precedent for future generations.” Read full statement here.

On Sunday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton released his official Attorney General Opinion in response to the Supreme Court’s same-sex ‘marriage’ decision clarifying that County clerks, Justices of the Peace, and Judges still retain religious freedoms that can allow accommodation of their religious objections to issuing same-sex ‘marriage’ licenses.
