Press Release: Texas Attorney General: Austin City Council Must Stop Illegally Funding Abortions

Austin, TX – September 27, 2024: Austin, TX- Today, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against Austin City Council for the recent budget allocation of $400,000 of taxpayer dollars to send women out of state to obtain abortions. In August, the Austin City Council voted to continue setting money aside for their “Reproductive Justice Fund”. This fund has continued to receive money even after the Texas legislature passed a law in 2019 that prohibits taxpayer funds being used to fund abortion providers (SB 22) and laws to protect the preborn like the Texas Heartbeat Act.

Jonathan Saenz, President and Attorney for Texas Values released the following statement:

“Abortion-obsessed Austin City Council got their hand caught in the pro-death cookie jar. Austin has continually defied our state law with its countless funding of abortion. The Texas legislature and the U.S. Supreme Court have made it clear that the life of the preborn should be protected in our state. Texas provides $140 million to help women choose life but sadly Austin wastes thousands to break the law.”

Texas Values has actively opposed Austin City Council’s promotion and funding of abortion for years and was present at the most recent city council meeting to testify against the budget amendment. Texas Values was the leading organization in supporting SB 22 in 2019 and the Texas Heartbeat Law in 2021.
