BREAKING: Special Sessions Begins Today, Governor Abbott Prioritizes Women’s Privacy

Austin, TX– July 21, 2025: Today begins the first Special Session of the 89th Texas Legislature and Governor Abbott has made protecting women in their private, sex-separated spaces a priority.
The Texas Women’s Privacy Act successfully, Senate Bill 240, passed out of the Texas Senate in the Regular Session but failed to pass in the Texas House. Despite strong support from over 80 members of the Texas House who signed on to the bill.
Last week, Texas House Representative Valoree Swanson filed a bill to protect women’s privacy, House Bill 32.
Mary Elizabeth Castle, Director of Government Relations for Texas Values said:
“I am grateful to Governor Abbott for prioritizing women’s dignity and privacy in the Special Session. Now is the time to act. Protecting women’s privacy was unfinished business in the regular session. A number of states already have laws with very specific language that men do not belong in women’s locker rooms, shelters, and prisons. Protecting women’s dignity and safety is a top priority for Texas.”
