Breaking: Religious Freedom Axed by State Commission; Texas Values Files Legal Brief in Same-Sex Case

Austin, Texas – Texas Values joined Thomas More Society to file a legal amicus brief at the Texas Supreme Court in support of Waco, Texas Judge Dianne Hensley, whose deeply-held religious convictions prevented her from conducting same-sex wedding ceremonies.  

After Judge Hensley was unfairly investigated and warned by the State Commission on Judicial Conduct, she filed a lawsuit against the commission based on violations of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.  Lower courts ruled against her, but the Texas Supreme Court is now considering whether to revive the lawsuit. 

Jonathan Saenz, President and Attorney for Texas Values stated:

“In a state where religious freedom is widely supported, it’s very troubling that a state agency would violate Texas’ 20+ year-old religious freedom statute and punish Judge Hensley for following the law. We look forward to the Texas Supreme Court correcting this injustice.”
