The Texas Ten Commandments Law & Project

The Texas Ten Commandments Bill, SB 10, passed the Texas Legislature during the 89th Regular Legislative Session in 2025 and was signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott in June 21st of the same year. The law went into effect September 1, 2025. Every public school classroom will be required to display a Ten Commandments poster or framed copy and each school district must accept conforming posters or framed copies that are privately donated. Texas Values led the effort to get this new law passed and we’re continuing our efforts by protecting this law in court and working together with like-minded partners to get Ten Commandment posters into classrooms.

Why Do We Need the Ten Commandments In Classrooms?

The Ten Commandments were once a cornerstone of American education and the American legal system.  They put forth universal moral truths that bring a sense of clarity to students in public school systems that are being inundated with moral confusion and ambiguity. With recent Supreme Court decisions strongly upholding individual religious freedom such as Kennedy v. Bremerton and abrogating of the legal Lemon test, we have a unique opportunity to put more focus back on our nation’s history and founding principles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is it legal to display the Ten Commandments in Texas?

A: In the landmark case of Kennedy v Bremerton School District in 2022, the Supreme Court ended the Lemon Test and replaced it with a legal test or “standard” that focuses on whether a certain item or action relates back to the history and traditions of our country. There is no document in American history, except the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, that has the history or tradition of the Ten Commandments.

Based on this new test, we are confident these laws in various states allowing for display of the Ten Commandments are constitutional and will ultimately be upheld by the Supreme Court.

We are aware of current litigation over the policies, and also aware of adverse opinions. The recent court ruling only applies to 12 school districts in Texas who were involved in the lawsuit. The other 1188 school districts in Texas are free and legal to put the Ten Commandments poster up in their classrooms on September 1 or sooner.

We remain confident the Supreme Court will uphold the laws.
