US House Passes Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act #SaveWomensSports

Austin, TX – April 20, 2023: Today, The US House Passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. This Act reaffirms the vital protections for women’s sports guaranteed by Title IX, ensuring that women and girls have equal athletic opportunities. The momentum is strong in this , but in Texas we still have work to do to pass this type of common-sense protection at the state, as Senate Bill 15 has passed the Texas Senate but not the Texas House.

Mary Elizabeth Castle, Director of Government Relations, Texas Values stated:

“For the past few years female athletes across the nation, including here in Texas, have been speaking out against the unfair phenomenon of men competing in women and girls sports. Today, our U.S. Congress took a stand for women’s sports and women’s rights by passing the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. Women and girls should not lose out on trophies, scholarships, and careers because a man wants to compete in their space that is already protected by Title IX. While the passage of this federal bill is a victory, there is still work to be done in Texas to pass the Save Women’s Sports bill in the Texas legislature. Usually, as Texas goes so goes the nation, but this time Texas should take a cue from Washington D.C.”

Here in Texas, Texas Values worked hard to get SB 15 by Senator Mayes Middleton passed in the Senate. We are working equally as hard to get its House counterpart – HB 23 by Representative Valoree Swanson – passed as well. SB 15 has been referred to the Texas House Higher Education Committee.

To help us accomplish this, Riley Gaines, 12-time collegiate award-winning competitive swimmer and spokeswoman for the #SaveWomensSports issue for the Independent Women’s Forum, another organizational ally, has testified before the Texas State Senate, and her testimony was crucial to its passage.
