TX Senate Women’s Privacy Act Hearing, Locker Room, Bathroom Protection at Capitol

Austin, TX – April 3, 2025: Today, the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing, today at 9 a.m. in the Senate Chamber, on the Texas Women’s Privacy Act, SB 240 authored by Texas Senator Mayes Middleton. The bill ensures that private spaces, owned or controlled by local or state government, must be designated for use by individuals based on their biological sex. Seventeen states have passed similar legislation making sure that men do not enter women’s restrooms, locker rooms, and private spaces.
Save Women’s Sports leader Riley Gaines said:
“SB 240 is a crucial step in protecting women’s privacy, dignity, and safety in spaces designed specifically for us. No woman or girls should ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe in places meant for their privacy. It’s time we prioritize common sense and fairness. I urge lawmakers to pass SB 240 without hesitation”.
Texas Values team members and female college athletes and concerned citizens will be on site all day at the Texas Capitol, and are expected to speak in favor of SB 240 at the public hearing today. For media inquiries, contact Ashley Fordinal at (737) 314-2450.
Mary Elizabeth Castle, Director of Government Relations for Texas Values said:
“No woman should have to go into a locker room or bathroom and be startled by a man approaching her in the woman’s designated space. There have been too many incidents in Texas public buildings and public schools where women and girls of all ages have been forced to undress or be in a vulnerable position with men present in spaces that are supposed to be separated based on sex. It is time for Texas to make the Texas Woman’s Privacy Act law”
The Texas House of Representatives has an identical bill HB 239 authored by Representative Valoree Swanson and it has gained the support of 80 members of the Texas House. Earlier in the session, a young woman who works at the state Capitol was approached by a male in the Women’s Restroom at the Capitol. Since then, the State Preservation Board has issued a policy for the restrooms at the Capitol indicating that people must use the restroom that corresponds with their biological sex.
