Texas Values Interviewed on Cruz’s State Marriage Defense Act

Ted_Cruz_at Values voters summit (620-260)Late last week, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (Texas) and Senator Mike Lee (Utah) introduced the State Marriage Defense Act (S.2024). If passed, the bill would protect states, including Texas, from the federal government’s efforts to force gay marriage on them, as we have seen the Obama Administration’s Justice Department recently do.

The bill will ensures the federal government gives the same deference to the 33 states that define marriage as the union between one man and one woman as it does other states. Over 2/3rds of Americans live in states, like Texas, where the people have voted for a constitutional one man – one woman marriage definition. In stark contrast, only 4.5% of Americans live in states that have actively voted to redefine marriage (most states that have redefined marriage are the result of activist judges).

Yesterday, Texas Values President Jonathan Saenz was on the Family Research Council’s Washington Watch with Tony Perkins radio program to talk about the importance of protecting marriage at the state level and Sen. Ted Cruz’s State Marriage Defense Act.

In introducing the State Marriage Defense Act, Senator Cruz stated:

“I support traditional marriage. Under President Obama, the federal government has tried to re-define marriage, and to undermine the constitutional authority of each state to define marriage consistent with the values of its citizens,” said Sen. Cruz. “The Obama Administration should not be trying to force gay marriage on all 50 states. We should respect the states, and the definition of marriage should be left to democratically elected legislatures, not dictated from Washington. This bill will safeguard the ability of states to preserve traditional marriage for its residents.”

We applaud U.S. Senator Ted Cruz for standing up for the right of states like Texas to continue to define marriage as between one man and one woman with this new legislation.
