In the 87th Regular session, Senator Bryan Hughes was able to change state policy on sex education to “Opt-in” and made this policy into law by amending H.B. 1525, the School Finance and Public Education bill. The amendment to make Human Sexuality instruction Opt-In means that schools had to ask ALL parents permission before they could teach ANY child sex education. Before this law, parents were the ones who had to “Opt-Out” their kids from human sexuality instruction. We know that school districts like Austin ISD and surrounding areas have since implemented a permission slip system to teach Sex-Ed. But we also know that many school districts complained about this process and cannot wait to see the Opt-In law expire! This was a crucial win for parents and children of Texas, because it offers more control to the parents.

The current Opt-In requirement is set to expire August 1, 2024, but the legislation (SB 163 by Senator Donna  Campbell) that would have made it permanent failed to pass in the Texas House in the 88^th Legislative Session. Our elected officials must do something before the clock runs out! Sign the petition to let your voice be heard!

Opt- in for sex education is important because throughout the state of Texas, radical  “comprehensive sex education” curriculum is being promoted in schools that indoctrinates children with a harmful LGBT agenda and encourages kids to engage in sexual activity. As a reminder the law requires that abstinence is taught as the preferred behavior to all school aged kids. (TEC 28.004) It’s important for Texans to remember that children belong first to their parents and families, not to their government. Parents have the primary responsibility and authority over the education of their children.

In the past, Austin ISD, and other school districts run by Planned Parenthood and “SIECUS: Sex Ed for Social Change”, have been known to use human sexuality instruction to directly attack the traditional, historical understanding of marriage and family, and to infuse divisive sexual orientation and gender identity issues into classroom discussions and coursework.

We have a short window of time to make Opt-In permanent to protect students from activist school districts pushing radical “comprehensive” sex education instruction..
