Sex-Ed Opt-In, the policy that says schools must first ask parents before giving human sexuality instruction, is here to stay!
(This policy is similar to how a school would ask if your child could go on a field trip.) As many of you know, the Sex-Ed Opt-In law that was passed in 2021 was set to expire, yesterday August 1. Your Texas Values team has been working hard since the last legislative session to make sure that this policy would continue, despite legislation not passing to remove the expiration date. Yesterday afternoon, the Texas Education Agency released updated guidance that says schools can still operate under a system where they ask parents permission before giving human sexuality instruction! Sex-Ed Opt-In was saved!
As you recall, leftist school districts like Austin ISD bemoaned the permission slip system and complained it was complicated. We know that these types of school districts are worried that if parents are in control, kids won’t sign up to receive their radical LGBT, comprehensive sex-Ed. For an example of how bad Sex-Education can be, see what curriculum Austin ISD approved in 2019. But parents can now be confident that they are still in control on who teaches their kid about human sexuality, which we believe is the role of the parents.
Yesterday’s victory is what we do here at Texas Values. When the legislation did not pass in the regular session, we asked our coalition partners to ask the governor to put it on the special session call. When we did not get a bill passed in the special session, the Texas Values policy team worked endlessly with members of the legislature, the Texas State Board of Education, and Governor Greg Abbott to come up with a policy solution to keep Sex-Ed Opt-In. We asked you to share and sign a petition when the clock was running out and over 2,000 of you signed the petition!
We were able to find a solution to the expiration of Sex-Ed Opt-In because of our relationships with the legislature, agencies, and the governor of Texas. You can count on Texas Values to be persistent and work until there is a solution. When you support Texas Values, these are the results that you can expect to see!
However, the work continues! We need your help and support to make sure this becomes a state law that can’t be changed. Texas Values has worked very hard on this and we will not stop until it is done. As we prepare for the next legislative session we are making this a priority. We want to make sure that parents can make the best decision for their children. All of our efforts on Sex-Ed Opt-In and other education issues need your financial support.
