Release: Odessa City Council to Take Final Vote on Protecting Women’s Privacy

Odessa, TX – November 12, 2024: Odessa City Council will meet at 5 p.m. today to take a final vote on a new city ordinance protecting the safety and privacy of women and girls in locker room and restroom facilities. The proposed city ordinance defines sex by biology based on a person’s birth certificate as entered “at or near the time of birth.”

Jonathan Covey, Policy Director for Texas Values, released the following statement:

“The Odessa City Council is showing that they care to protect the safety and privacy of women and girls in sex separated spaces. This common sense update provides a framework for other cities to follow and is bold leadership at the exact right moment.”

The city council members acted last month to tentatively approve the ordinance by a vote of 5-2 after testimony from Texas Values and members of the Odessa community in support of the ordinance.

Texas Values has been the leading organization, for over a decade, in protecting safety and privacy of women and girls in locker rooms and restroom facilities.

Members of the Texas Values policy team will be on site, available for comment. Contact Ashley at media@txvalues.org or 737-314-2450 (m) to schedule an interview.
