Live Blogging From State Board of Education Social Studies Resumes Today!!

12:08 a.m.  Berlanga tries to eliminate “illegal immigration” from study.  Amendment fails.

11:51 p.m. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor added.

11:26 p.m.  Black Panthers struck from standards, unanimous.

11:05 p.m. Craig moves to adjourn.  Vote fails 6-6.

10:46 p.m.  Craig amendment.  Strike Phyllis Schafly, add Sandra Day O’Connor.  First female to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.  Appointed to high court by Presiden Ronald Reagan.  Oh, and she was born in TEXAS!  Passes.

10:22 p.m.  Allen amendment.  add the name “Barack Obama”.   The section already states a significant year/occurrence, “2008(election of the first black president.”  Bradley makes amendment to add “Hussein” to Barack Obama, his middle name.  Much discussion.  Bradley withdraws his motion.

Barack Obama added.  For consistency, name will be listed as Obama name is listed on White House biography.  Barack H. Obama, i believe.

10:05 p.m.  Dunbar amendment:  Add Wisconsin v. Yoder case.  Parental rights/freedom of religion case.  Amish could not be forced to follow compulsory education laws as they violate the Amish freedom of religion.   This is a huge case for these issues.

10:05 p.m. Craig amendment.  White v. Regester case added to U.S. Supreme Court cases.  Gerrymandering case, passes.

9:44 p.m.  U.S. History: McLeroy amendment.  Add “eugenics” to a list of “causes and effects of social issues”.  No objection, amendment passes.

9:20 p.m. Eigth Grade TEKS over, complete.

Atlantic triangular trade eliminated, substituted for “TransAtlantic slave trade”.  amendment passes, unanimously.

7:35 p.m.  Jefferson Davis comes out, then goes back in? Dunbar amendment being debated.

7:05 p.m.  Berlanga Amendment, add  “causes of the Civil War including slavery and states rights.”  passes.

6:42 p.m.  Mercer makes amendment to add Hiram Rhodes Revel, first African-American U.S. Senator elected to office.  Leo makes note that he was a Republican.

6:05 p.m.  McLeroy makes annoucement, religious freedom amendment to be offered later, in high school social studies.

8:36 p.m.  Dinner break.

We have seventh grade social studies.  McLeroy amendment on religion and law in eigth grade is to come up shortly.

Berlanga amendment to add more Tejanos to the standards; passes.

3:30   Effort to put Henry Cisneros back in, fails.  5-10, along party lines.  All Republicans vote against Henry Cisneros.

12:11 P.M. Berlanga moves to put Dolores Huerta back in Grade 3 social studies.  Dolores Huerta is already in high school social studies.

Agosto defends Huerta by saying what a professor talked about, that there is no contradiction between socialism and democracy.

Bob Craig-supports Dolores Huerta amendment.

Recorded Vote: 6-9, Huerta amendment for Grade 3 fails.  Huerta does not go back into Grade 3, but she will stay in high school social studies.

Ruby Bridges added, by Pat Hardy, 10 others.
