Free Speech Rights Are Stubborn Things: Sen. Cornyn Rips Obama’s “Fishy” Actions Targeting Free Speech, In Letter

It is turning into a good old Texas Showdown on the fate of Obama’s health care mandates.  First Texas Congressman Lloyd Doggett specifically asked for feedback from his constituents and then he verbally attacked them when they voiced their opposition and he couldn’t take the heat (and I am not talking about the 100 degree weather in Austin).

Now, our U.S. Senator from Texas, John Cornyn, who is actually listening to his constitutents, has now weighed in on the most recent attack on free speech related to healthcare, by the liberals, particularly President Obama.  As you may be aware, President Obama’s staff, via his White House blog, has made the following request to the American public:

“If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to [email protected].”  Click here for full comments from the White House blog post, titled “Facts Are Stubborn Things.” http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/Facts-Are-Stubborn-Things/

Sen. Cornyn, in a strongly worded letter, criticizes the most recent methods being used in a desparate attempt to save Obama’s health care proposals.  He concludes with some serious questions that expects to be answered.  A few excerpts from Cornyn’s letter are below:

“I am not aware of any precedent for a President asking American citizens to report their fellow citizens to the White House for pure political speech that is deemed “fishy” or otherwise inimical to the White House’s political interests.”

“As Congress debates health care reform and other critical policy matters, citizen engagement must not be chilled by fear of government monitoring the exercise of free speech rights.”

“Do your own past statements qualify as ‘disinformation’? For example, is it ‘disinformation’ to note that in 2003 you said: ‘I happen to be a proponent of a single-payer universal health care plan’?”
